Welcome to Mission Hills. Thank you for joining us today, whether in person or online. I am so excited to be teaching God's Word today. We are continuing a series from the book of Galatians. We are in week two and if you missed week-one, please go back online and catch Craig's intro. It was a fantastic foundation for this important book!
Trans. Before we continue in Galatians, I have a confession to make. I am a recovering Pharisee. If you grew up in the church, you might know what I mean, but for those who are not familiar with the word, Pharisee, let me explain.
The Pharisees were one set of religious leaders at the time of Jesus. They looked really good with their faith in God on the outside, but on the inside their faith was shallow. They did lots of good things and said lots of good things to look good to people, but the Pharisees were ''not fair you see.'' :-)
They looked down on everyone else by judging their faithfulness to God. They taught in order to be part of the really spiritual group, you must BEHAVE a certain way to BELONG. As Craig, spoke of last week, you had to live according to all the Jewish rules and regulations to have a seat at the kitchen table.
So, I found myself sitting back as a Pharisee thinking I had a better relationship with Jesus than everyone else. I had read my Bible more times. I prayed better prayers. I was pursuing degrees and gaining experiences. ''I didn't drink, smoke, or chew, or go with girls who do.'' But I judged those who did! My external actions for God were not lining up with my internal faithfulness.
Jesus had strong words for the Pharisees. He called them hypocrites. In Greek, the original language of the New Testament of the Bible, ''hypocrite'' meant ''actor'' or ''one who wears a mask''. It was the word used for those who acted on the Roman Theater Stage. They were hypocrites, just playing parts for ...
