So we're starting a new message series today on Noah's Ark. Now the story of Noah's ark might be the most familiar story in the bible, even to people who have never opened a bible...but it's also one of the most misunderstood stories in the bible...even for people who've been reading it their whole lives.

I believe the world has corrupted the story. A few years ago there was a major movie about Noah's Ark starring Russell Crowe and the whole point of that movie seemed to be that God is cruel. That's a corruption of the story.

But I can't get too mad at the way the world has corrupted the story, because the church has done the same thing, just in a different direction. The world's made it cruel, but we've made it cute. I remember when my first daughter was born...since I was a pastor, people asked if we were going to decorate the nursery in a biblical theme. And I was like, ''I don't know...what biblical theme is appropriate for a nursery?'' And they all said the same thing: Noah's Ark! And I was like, that's a horrible idea! I was picturing a border around the nursery ceiling with ocean waves and little people drowning in the waves. Why on earth would you put that in a baby's room!

But that's not what the story looks like when we tell it on nursery walls or in Sunday School. When the church tells the story, it's all about the Lord told Noah, there's gonna be a floody floody so get those children out of the muddy, muddy...anyone?

Yeah, we've got cute songs and children's bibles that literally tell the story of Noah's ark with puppies and rainbows, but the truth is, it's not a cute story. It's a pretty raw story, actually.
