OPENING: We are in a series on the 10 Commandments. So far we have looked at the first two.

Have No Other God's before Me - or stated in the positive, ''Love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind and strength''. So that is a command toward singular worship.
Make No Graven Images - This we said is a command to NOT reduce the reality of God down to something we IMAGINE and IMAGE.

The First is concerned with WHO we worship, the second with HOW we worship.

Today we come to Commandment 3.

TEXT: Exodus 20:7 (ESV)
7 ''You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.

The first thing that jumps out about this 3rd commandment is that the wording of the revelation shifts from first person in commandments 1 and 2, to the 3rd person in commandment three. This pattern continues throughout the rest of the commandments.

This signifies that in someway the 3rd through 10th commandments are unique from the first two.

The first two commandments relate directly to our relationship with God alone. There does not have to be another human alive for us to focus our worship on God and avoid idolatry.

Commandments 3-10 address our influence on other humans. The first commandment relative to our relationships addresses the subject of our words.

Through out the scripture we are told of the power of our words.
