INTRODUCTION: We come today to the sixth commandment, TEXT: Exodus 20:13 (ESV) 13 ''You shall not murder.

Now let me be honest, at first thought there is temptation to just skip over this one. Surely, there aren't many today who are contemplating murder, wrestling with that temptation.

But then I considered the fact, that most nights of the week, Julie and I watch dateline... and it always begins with, ''They were a perfectly normal couple, attending church every week...''. Sometimes I wonder why Julie gets into dateline so much. She takes notes!

But the fact is, while this is a prohibition against murder, it also address a LOT MORE than murder, things we may all struggle with. IN FACT, I can not possibly unpack all that is in this verse in one sermon.

You see, When you study the Bible, you discover that all murder is killing, but not all killing is murder.

This is a very short command. In the Hebrew it is literally only two words - NO MURDER

When the King James Version of the bible was translated into the English language the word, ''kill'' was chosen, ''thou shalt not kill''.

Murder was the first crime ever committed in scripture - Cain murdering Able. And it has run rampant since that time. You say, but Pastor people have grown so much since those primitive times...

Do you realize that we have just completed the deadliest century of all time. In the 20th Century, 170 Million people murdered by their governments apart from war.

Under Mao - 50 Million
Under Stalin - 20 Million
Among the Hutus and Tootsies - 1 million
One third of the population of Cambodia

These were murdered by their government and that's apart from war. Typically, by the command of a single individual. Murder is a very relevant problem.
