Exodus 20:16
INTRODUCTION: We come to the 9th of the 10 Commandments. Remember that Moses is building and shaping a Nation of people. Laws determine culture. What you allow and what you prohibit determines the culture you will enjoy or tolerate. This is true of a nation, this is true of a business, this is true of a church, and this is true of a family.
As a parent, you are in the place of Moses - you are the law giver. In American terminology you are the Executive, Legislative and Judicial branches of government. You have tremendous power in shaping the culture of your family for better or worse.
EXAMPLE: I saw on social media recently a little kid, maybe 3 years old cursing out his father. What did dad do? I got out his phone, made a video and posted it to instagram. Now, he shaped the culture of his home in doing that.
ILLUSTRATION: Most of the calculations for the Saturn 5 Rocket were done on a yellow legal pad. Those calculations had to be checked and rechecked dozens of times. Someone asks Von Braun why he built in such repetitive redundancy. He responded, ''Because an inch on a launch pad means a mile on the moon''.
You see, small allowances in childhood program that child in such a way that the funny video you post on tictok one day becomes a staring role on Jerry Springer in a few years.
So Moses is doing what any good parent should do. He is getting with the Lord and asking, ''How should I lead these people'' and allowing God to determine the boundaries.
He receives 10 commandments. Now throughout much of the rest of Exodus and Deuteronomy Moses elaborates on these 10 and gives a few hypothetical cases for precedence. So the 10 commandments are like chapter headings that are unpacked in the following chapters.
Today we come to the 9th commandment -
