Introduction

1. I remember when I was in college our country was going through some of the toughest times in our history. On a positive side, the Civil Rights movement was going full-bore and although the cause was just the cost was great. Racial tensions were boiling over. The pride of racial prejudice and discrimination was being uncovered and the conflict, chaos and consternation in which our nation knew deep down had to be paid for us to truly be a nation with liberty and justice for all. Also, during that time there was the Vietnam War. Particularly on college campuses everywhere there were sit ins, protests, and demonstrations. I can tell you from personal experience the mood of the nation was just not good.

2. In 1972, a song came out that is my favorite song to listen to. I can tell you it puts me in a good mood every time I hear it. I never get tired of listening to it. It was written by a man named Tom Johnston from one of my favorite groups called The Doobie Brothers. He wrote quite a few of their hits, but he said when he finished writing this song at 4 o'clock in the morning, it was the only time he knew he had a big hit on his hands. The song was ''Listen to the Music.'' It called for world peace. He believed that if all the world leaders could just (in his words) ''Get together on a grassy sunlit knoll and listen to music'' everybody could get together and get along.

3. Johnston didn't see the song accomplish that goal, but he was on to something. There is an incredible, emotional, psychological, physiological and even spiritual benefit to music. Here are just a few of them -
