Take a Vacation From Your Worries
Richard Bradley
Philippians 4:6-7
Not sure if you've seen it but some years ago a movie was released titled ''What About Bob?'' If you're a Bill Murray fan, and especially a fan of cornball humor, this movie might be the one for you. Murray's character is continuously consumed by personal phobias and neurotic fears. At some point in the movie a psychiatrist advises him to take a vacation from his fears. In other words, set aside a specified period of time when he would simply say to all of his many fears and worries, ''Don't bother me, I'm on vacation.'' Sound ludicrous to you? Perhaps, but wouldn't it be nice if we could? As we examine today's text I believe we'll find a way to do exactly that.
While Philippians 4 doesn't give us a recipe for answered prayer, it does give us a heavenly recipe for living in peace despite our troubling circumstances. As believers, we don't have to wait until all of our problems are resolved to be at peace and that is some really good news!
Philippians 4:6-7
6 do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.
7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
ESV
In verse 6 Paul reminded his readers that they shouldn't be anxious about anything. Good advice because fear and anxiety will ruin your life and Christian witness faster than just about anything else. If you need to take a vacation from your worries today's text will tell you how to do exactly that.
TAKE A VACATION FROM YOUR WORRIES THROUGH VIGILANCE
