THE POWER OF SACRIFICIAL LIVING
GENESIS 22
IN THE TWENTY-SECOND CHAPTER OF GENESIS WE READ OF A MAN
TAKING HIS ONLY SON - HIS MUCH LOVED, TRUSTING SON - ON A
THREE DAY JOURNEY FOR THE PURPOSE OF PUTTING A KNIFE TO HIS
HEART AND SACRIFICING HIM ON AN ALTAR, 'WHAT A HORRIBLE
STORY!" WE MIGHT REACT. YET, THESE STRANGE AND BIZARRE
HAPPENINGS ARE A PART OF ONE OF THE BIBLE'S MOST BEAUTIFUL
AND TENDER EPISODES. ON THE SURFACE IT APPEARS TO BE A
STORY OF PAGAN UNBELIEF, DESPAIR, AND HATE. IN REALITY IT
IS A JOYOUS, LIVING ILLUSTRATION OF FAITH, HOPE, AND LOVE.
SOMEONE HAS SAID, "WHEN GOD IS ABOUT TO MAKE PREEMINENT
USE OF A MAN, HE PUTS HIM THROUGH THE FIRE.' THIS IS
ILLUSTRATED THROUGHOUT GOD'S WORD. JEREMIAH HAD HIS TIME IN
THE DUNGEON, EZEKIEL FACED HIS TESTING IN DIRE POVERTY.
HOSEA ENDURED THE TRIALS OF AN UNFAITHFUL WIFE. SHADRACH,
NESHACH, AND ABEDNEGO FACED THE FIERY FURNACE OF NEBUCHADNEZZAR.
AND DANIEL HAD HIS TIME IN THE LION'S DEN. WHEN GOD IS ABOUT
TO MAKE PREEMINENT USE OF A MAN, HE PUTS HIM THROUGH THE FIRE.
AT THIS POINT IN GOD'S HISTORY, HE IS ABOUT TO MAKE PREEMINENT
USE OF ABRAHAM. HE IS DESTINED TO BECOME THE FATHER OF A
GREAT NATION. INDEED, THE FATHER OF ALL FOLK OF FAITH. GOD
IS ABOUT TO HONOR ABRAHAM LIKE NONE OTHER. BUT, THERE IS ONE
2
MORE TEST - NOT TO PROVE TO GOD THAT ABRAHAM WAS FAITHFUL -
HE KNEW! BUT, TO PROVE IT TO ABRAHAM. LOOK AT GENESIS 22,
VERSES 1 TO 14:
Now IT CAME ABOUT AFTER THESE THINGS, THAT
GOD TESTED ABRAHAM, AND SAID TO HIM, "ABRAHAM!"
AND HE SAID, "HERE I AM,'
AND HE SAID, "TAKE NOW YOUR SON, YOUR ONLY
SON, WHOM YOU LOVE, ISAAC, AND GO TO THE LAND
OF MORIAH; AND OFFER HIM THERE AS A BURNT
OFFERING ON ONE OF THE MOUNTAINS OF WHICH I
WILL TELL YOU.1,
So ABRAHAM ROSE EARLY IN THE MORNING AND
SADDLED HIS DONKEY, AND TOOK TWO OF HIS
YOUNG MEN WITH HIM AND ISAAC HIS SON; AND HE
SPLIT WOOD FOR THE BURNT OFFERING, AND AROSE
AND WENT TO THE PLACE OF WHICH GOD HAD TOL ...
