SAY: "FATHER"
"AFTER THIS MANNER PRAY YE: OUR FATHER .,e MATTHEW 6:9
YOU MAY NOT PRAY MUCH ANYMORE. I'M TOLD A LOT OF
PEOPLE HAVE QUIT PRAYING. SOMEONE SAID: "I DON'T FEEL AS
THOUGH MY PRAYERS ARE GETTING ABOVE THE CEILING." ANOTHER
SHRUGS HIS SHOULDERS AND STATES: "I TRIED IT ONCE AND IT
DIDN'T WORK." MAYBE YOU' RE LIKE THE SENSITIVE SOUL WHO
SAID: "WHY SHOULD GOD WANT TO TALK TO ME, HE'S GOT A WHOLE
UNIVERSE TO RUN?"
YOU KNOW, WHEN YOU READ THE BIBLE YOU GET THE IDEA THAT
THE DISCIPLES, THE PEOPLE WHO FOLLOWED JESUS, WHO BELIEVED
IN HIM AND TRUSTED HIM, FELT MUCH THE SAME WAY, MAYBE THEY
JUST WEREN'T IMPRESSED WITH HOW THEY HAD SEEN IT DONE. YOU
SEE, THERE WERE TWO KINDS OF PEOPLE THEY HAD OBSERVED IN
PRAYER. THE PHARISEES WERE ALWAYS PRAYING IN PUBLIC PLACES.

WERE BEAUTIFUL PRAYERS, BUT FORMAL AND REPETITIOUS AND LONG.

PRAYER. ONE GREAT JEWISH TEACHER SAID: 'HE WHO PRAYS
WITHIN HIS HOUSE SURROUNDS IT WITH A WALL THAT IS STRONGER
THAN IRON." AND THEY WERE VERY SINCERE IN PRAYING IN PUBLIC,
2
THEY GOT TO THOSE BUSY CORNERS AT THE TIME OF PRAYER ON
PURPOSE, THE PHARISEES WERE CONVINCED THAT PUBLIC PRAYING
WOULD BE A GREAT WAY TO INFLUENCE OTHER PEOPLE. WHEN JESUS
CALLED THEM "HYPOCRITES," HE WASN'T USING THE WORD AS WE
USE IT TODAY. HE SIMPLY MEANT THEY WERE PRAYING TO BE SEEN
BY OTHERS. THEY REALLY THOUGHT THAT WAS THE WAY IT SHOULD
BE DONE.
ANOTHER GROUP WHO PRAYED WERE THE 'HEATHENS" OR THE
PAGANS., THESE WERE PEOPLE WHO BELIEVED IN FALSE GODS.
YOU REMEMBER HOW THEY PRAYED. ELIJAH CHIDED THOSE PROPHETS
OF BAAL WHO KEPT CALLING ON THEIR FALSE GOD: "MAYBE HE'S
ASLEEP, OR GONE OUT SOMEWHERE. KEEP ...
