Psalm 40

February 22, 1980 is a day that will live in infamy in not only sports, but in American history. President Jimmy Carter announced that the US would boycott the 1980 Summer Olympic Games in Moscow because of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. The United States was also reeling from the effects of a major recession, as well as the Iran hostage crisis.

A 7th seeded hockey rocked the world in the Winter Olympic games in Lake Placid, New York. The Soviet Union team had won the previous 4 Olympic gold medals and was assured of winning a 5th. Ten days earlier, they had just routed the US team 10-3 in an exhibition game. However, on this day, the scrappy US team defeated the Soviets 4-3, and went on to defeated Finland to win the gold medal. The US/Soviet game has since been referred to as ''The Miracle on Ice,'' and many will remember the voice of the famed sports caster Al Michael asking the question, ''Do You Believe in Miracles?''

More than 2000 years ago, there was a far greater miracle than the Miracle on Ice, it was the Miracle of the Incarnation. When Jesus stepped out of Heaven, robed Himself in human flesh, and the Son of God became the Son of Man.

If our greatest need had been money, God would have sent us an economist. If our greatest need had been pleasure, God would have sent us an entertainer. But our greatest need was forgiveness, so God sent us a Savior.''
