Habakkuk 1
I ran across this story while preparing tonight's study and having watched my children play sports and having rooted for my favorite teams for years, I can sympathize with the sentiments expressed by this family.
''A number of years ago our soccer-loving family helped host a boys' soccer team from Costa Rica. With their advanced ball-handling and passing skills, this elite team reached the finals of the tournament. In that final game it was obvious they possessed better skills than the other team, a big and physical American team that relied on bullying and cheap shots. Unfortunately, the officials were blindly oblivious to every foul. They called nothing, allowing outright ''muggings.'' After the Costa Rican boys lost 2-1, I had to restrain myself from yelling at the inept officials. I just wanted them to notice the injustices, intervene like they're supposed to, and make a few calls. Instead, they didn't do their jobs, and the game wasn't played fairly.''
If you have watched sports with a vested interest, a child playing or your favorite team, then you know the feeling that rises inside you when your sense of fair play has been violated. (Just go to a Vikings game at the Concrete Palace on Friday night when the referee makes a call they shouldn't have or fails to make a call they should have and you will hear from the mouths of those around you and possibly your own exactly what I am speaking of)!
When people look at this world and the way things are, (Massive Fires in California, Destruction in Louisiana from hurricane Ida, sad state of affairs internationally with Afghanistan, School shooting in NC today and then the ongoing battle with COVID), they feel the same way about God and the way He ''officiates'' the world. Oppression, injustice and violence is commonplace. On top of all that are the personal tragedies that invade our lives.
