Tender Friend (2 of 9)
Series: Christ's Heart for Sinners
Stephen Whitney
Matthew 9:9-13
Joseph Scriven was living in Canada when he received word that his mother was seriously ill in 1857. Unable to be with her in Dublin Ireland he wrote her a letter of comfort and also enclosed the words of a poem that he wrote.
Sometime later when he was ill, a friend came to visit him and
saw the poem scribbled on scratch paper near his bed. His
friend though that the poem should be published and it was.
Though it is not considered to be an example of great literary writing, the simple truths in it have brought comfort to many.
What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer!
what peace we often forfeit, o what needless pain we bear,
All because we do not carry everything to God in prayer!
Are we weak and heavy laden, cumbered with a load of care?
Precious Savior, still our refuge - take it to the Lord in prayer.
Do thy friends despise, forsake thee? Take it to the Lord in prayer;
I his arms he'll take and shield thee - thou wilt find a solace there.
Another hymn by Johnson Oatman, Jr. put it this way:
There's not a friend like the lowly Jesus - No not one! No not one!
Webster defines a friend as: one who is attached to another
by affection; one who has esteem and regard for another.
Richard Stibbs - ''In friendship there is mutual comfort one in another . . . there is a mutual honor and respect one of another.''
The religious leaders saw how Jesus interacted with those people who they considered to live sinful lives and condemned him.
Matthew 11:19 A friend of tax collectors and sinners.
Not just someone who put up with them, but someone who talked to them, spent his time with them and even ate meals with them.
