Build One Another Up

1 Thessalonians 5:1-11
Context to the passage…
What is Thessalonians? Is it a person, a place,, or a thing? And why is it “first”?
First Thessalonians is the first of two letters written by the apostle Paul to the church in a city named Thessalonica. Thessalonica was the capital city of an area known as Macedonia. And it was a major port city on the Aegean Sea.
When you read through the book of Acts you read about how Paul, Silas, Timothy, Peter,, and other disciples traveled throughout the known world sharing the gospel and planting churches. To continue to encourage and lead the churches, Paul and others would write letters to them to explain doctrine, to encourage them in their specific circumstances, and to give them counsel in how to deal with certain issues that had come up in their congregations.
If you go back and read through the whole letter, you get to understand that the church in Thessalonica was doing pretty well. They had a strong faith, they labored in love and had a steadfast hope in Christ. Based on what they had been taught so far they were a healthy church.
However, what we tend to forget is how young these churches really were. We have to remember that this whole Christianity thing was really new. Scholars believe this letter was written around 50AD. That is only about 20 years after Jesus’ ministry and this particular church had only started in just the past 10 years. While we have centuries of understanding the Scriptures, doctrine and how to follow Jesus, these people only had a few years. So, they were still learning the basics of the Christian faith.
They needed to be built up in their faith. Specifically, there one was issue that they were confused about. Apparently, the church in Thessalonica recently had some people die. And they were not sure what would happen to them. There seemed to be a misunderstanding about what happens to people when they die in between the first coming ...
