The Church That Got the Devil’s Attention (2 of 7)
Series: The 7 Churches in Revelation
Richard Bradley
Revelation 2:8-11
A church can attract the Lord's attention for all sorts of reasons. Some of these reasons are bad and thankfully some are good. The church at Smyrna had Jesus' full and undivided attention for some very good reasons all though it may not have seemed like it to them at the time. Not much is known about this church. We know far more about the church at Ephesus than we do the church at Smyrna but there's a lot we can assume.
It doesn't say the church at Smyrna loved the Lord but they must have. It doesn't say the church at Smyrna worked hard for the Lord but they must have. It doesn't say that the church at Smyrna preached the gospel to those that needed to be rescued from the clutches of the evil one but they must have.
We know all this because of the source of their trouble. This must have been a dangerous church to the plans of the enemy. Because of their faithfulness the church at Smyrna had attracted the devil's attention. Unfortunately, too many churches today are not even on our enemy's radar.
Revelation 2:8-11
8 ''To the angel of the church in Smyrna write:
''The First and the Last, the One who was dead and came to life, says:
9 I know your tribulation and poverty, yet you are rich. I know the slander of those who say they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan.
10 Don't be afraid of what you are about to suffer. Look, the Devil is about to throw some of you into prison to test you, and you will have tribulation for 10 days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.
11 ''Anyone who has an ear should listen to what the Spirit says to the churches. The victor will never be harmed by the second death.
Look at what happens and should happen when we get the devil's attention.
WHEN WE GET THE DEVIL'S ATTENTION THERE WILL BE SUFFERING
9 I know your tribulation and poverty ...
