Series: The 7 Churches in Revelation
Richard Bradley
Revelation 3:14-22
Ever notice how much we like to talk about negative things, especially those that relate to others? Instead of talking about what's right with a church, or even an individual, it somehow makes us feel better to talk about what's wrong with them. Too many of our conversations begin with something like, ''did you hear about'' and then we could just fill in the blanks. Let's use the church at Laodicea as an example this morning. When was the last time you heard someone say anything about this church other than that they were lukewarm and make Jesus sick at His stomach? Unfortunately, we just can't seem to get past verses 15-17 but we should.
Let's try something different this morning. Let's talk less about their problems and more about their possibilities. Don't get me wrong, Jesus was not happy with this church but neither was He finished with them. It was to this church, the most infamous or infamous of all the seven churches, that Jesus gave some of His best advice and most glorious promises.
Revelation 3:14-22
14 ''And to the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write,
'These things says the Amen, the Faithful and True Witness, the Beginning of the creation of God:
15 ''I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot.
16 So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth.
17 Because you say, 'I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing' - and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked -
18 I counsel you to buy from Me gold refined in the fire, that you may be rich; and white garments, that you may be clothed, that the shame of your nakedness may not be revealed; and anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may see.
19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten. Therefore be zealous and repent.
