Introduction:
1. With our culture in such a constant upheaval and the low state of Christianity in America, there has been a renewed interest in recent years on the ancient church. In these troubling times, we have been searching for the ancient faith, the faith once delivered to the Saints, the faith that provides us a sure foundation, the faith that sustains us and connects us with the first Christians.

2. With this renewed interest, we have begun to see the value in the ancient statements of faith, the creeds of the church. The Apostles' Creed is a wonderful summary of the basic tenets of the Christian faith and is used by many churches across denominational boundaries to express our common faith.

3. A creed is simply an expression of what the church believes. Creeds were thought of as ''signs'' or ''symbols'' that identified Christians. Because of this, and the fact that this creed is brief, it was and continues to be used in public worship, recited by believers, confessing their faith. Repetition of the creed became a way to remind believers of the bedrock realities that had been first experienced by the apostles and then passed along.

4. Creeds largely came about to teach believers the faith and to counter heresy or false doctrines. The church felt it was necessary and still does to explain and promote our foundational Christian beliefs.

5. Creeds or Confessions of Faith are not exhaustive, these things are not all that we believe but they do represent the foundational truths of Christianity. These represent universal Christian teachings held by the Church of Jesus Christ.
