Today, we are looking at the statement, ''one holy Church, the communion of the saints.'' The Holy Spirit is not aimlessly floating through the world. He indwells and empowers the church - the community of God's people. As brothers and sisters in Christ, we are united by faith in the Son and adopted by the Father Almighty. The Apostles' Creed gives a unified voice to Christians around the world and throughout history. We are a global family, ''one holy church'' on earth serving and waiting for our heavenly home.

In the traditional versions of the Apostles' Creed, the words at this point are ''the holy catholic church'' but ''catholic'' here is not a reference to the ''Catholic'' church but means ''universal,'' ''all-embracing,'' consisting of all believers in all places at all times. One truth in our statement here is that there is ''one'' church. There may be many denominational expressions but only ''one holy church.'' Jesus in his prayer in John 17:20-23 prayed that his church would be as ''one.'' The church is universal but in the New Testament the emphasis is upon ''local'' churches. For instance, Paul addresses the church in Corinth (1 Cor. 1:2), the churches of Galatia (Gal. 1:2), the church of the Thessalonians (1 Thess. 1:1).

''It is God's design that all believers belong to a local church'' (The Essence of the Sermon in a Sentence, E.S.S.). The universal church does not gather for worship, for fellowship, for studying the Scriptures, or for service. The universal church in fact will not meet together for worship until the Lord Himself comes (Rev. 5:9-10).
