I Believe in the Forgiveness of Sins (10 of 11)
Series: The Apostles Creed

Matthew 18:21-35

Series: The tenth sermon in a series of eleven sermons on ''The Apostles' Creed, These Things We Believe.''

Of all the statements made in the Creed, this one may impact us the most on a personal level because salvation is the solution to the problem of our sin, God Forgives Our Sins in Salvation. In the beginning, Adam and Eve were innocent and given the ability to make choices. They freely chose to go their own way rather than God's. Paul described it, ''Sin came into the world because of what one man did, and with sin came death. This is why everyone must die-because everyone sinned'' (Rom. 5:12, NCV). We sin by nature and by choice. We instinctively know that ''All wrongdoing is sin,'' 1 John 5:17 at an early age. What does sin do? Why is it so harmful? Why do we need God's forgiveness?

-It brings restless and aimless living. ''Sin is lawlessness,'' (1 Jn. 3:4). Sin leads to walking in darkness. ''God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. 6 If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth'' (1 Jn. 1:5b-6).

-It enslaves. ''The wicked man is doomed by his own sins; they are ropes that catch and hold him'' (Prov. 5:22, TLB). ''The ropes of his sins will tie him up'' (5:22b, NCV). The Psalmist knew the power of sin and prayed, ''Guide my steps as you promised; don't let ...
