On Mission With God (3 of 4)
Series: Jonah
Joshua Malone
Jonah 3:1-10
ILLUS. - Have you ever been given a task you didn't want to do?
Maybe you've been asked to do something you thought was dumb, a bad idea, ridiculous, unnecessary, not in your best interest... or you just didn't want to do it.
God gave Jonah a mission he didn't want to go on, a command he didn't want to obey... and Jonah ran. - This week... we will see Jonah finally fulfill the mission, obey the command.
Recap: Jonah is a prophet of God in Israel. He is called by God to go to Nineveh, an Assyrian city (Gentile), and call out against the city because of their evil. He's told to go tell them Judgement is coming. Jonah runs from God. God pursues Jonah. Jonah ends up in the sea left for dead, but is swallowed by a fish... that God appoints. - Jonah cries out to God and God saves him with a fish. Then Jonah writes a psalm of praise from inside the fish. - Then God has the fish vomit Jonah up on dry land. - That's where we left off last week.
It's a story about man running from God, God pursuing man. It's about God's compassion, His love, His mercy... our sin, our need of repentance... it's a story about the mission of God in this world.
Jonah 3:1-10 - Then the word of the LORD came to Jonah the second time, saying, 2 ''Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and call out against it the message that I tell you.'' 3 So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, three days' journey in breadth. 4 Jonah began to go into the city, going a day's journey. And he called out, ''Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!''
Keep in some mind some things about NINEVEH.
This is a Gentile city, Jonah is a Jewish prophet. Nineveh was an Assyrian city. It was a large city, 3 day's journey in breadth. This journey to Nineveh they say would have taken about a month if on something like a camel... much longer if on foot.
