Heart to Heart (4 of 4)
Series: Jonah

Jonah 4:1-11
ILLUS. – Do you remember all those family sitcoms of the 90s? Family Matters – I was a big Urkel fan at one time. Full House – Who didn’t watch that? Shows like that sort of made up a lot of TV at one point in the 90s. – They were funny but every show had a little “lesson.” Right? The music changes... and Mr. Winslow and his daughters have a little chat and everyone goes “aww.” Then Urkel pops in does something funny and the show goes off. That was the formula. – You might call it the “heart to heart” moment of the show where you realize the lesson being taught.
We are in the heart to heart portion of Jonah. The curtain is going to be pulled back on Jonah’s heart... and we are going to get a glimpse of God’s heart and see they are NOT on the same page. – This is a problem.
This book has been about God’s compassion, His grace... His mission. It’s shown us how God loves and pursues sinners. We’ve seen this in His pursuit of the rebel prophet Jonah and in the rebellious city Nineveh.
The implication is ... God is gracious... God is compassionate... and we should be to. As those who have EXPERIENCED grace we should want to see grace EXTENDED to others. We are called to PARTICIPATE in God’s mission... and not just with our legs, hands, and mouth... but with our HEART.
Today, through God’s heart to heart with Jonah... let’s take a look at our own heart and see that God wants us to have a heart... like His.
Jonah 3:10 - When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil way, God relented of the disaster that he had said he would do to them, and he did not do it.
Jonah 4:1-11 – But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was angry. 2 And he prayed to the LORD and said, “O LORD, is not this what I said when I was yet in my country? That is why I made haste to flee to Tarshish; for I knew that you are a gracious God and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast lov ...
