2 Timothy 2:1-2

Well, the year was 2008. The Summer Olympics were in Beijing, China. Our men's track and field team was strong. The team was looking forward to competing in all these different events in track and field, especially in the relay events. America has been known to have strong runners. Our best runner in 2008 was a man named Tyson Gay. He had to go up against a guy named Usain Bolt, so the competition was stiff. But we felt like we had a good chance in the 400 meter relay race, the 4 by 100. But it never turned out to be, because in the qualifying heat, the USA team dropped the baton.

Anybody that's ever run track and field, or watched track and field knows that in a relay race the most important thing is to make a successful pass from one runner to the next. I was listening to this one track and field coach, and he said, ''A relay race is all about who gets the baton across the finish line first.'' He said, ''You can have great runners, but if they're not able to transfer the baton from one runner to the next - if it drops to the ground, you're out.'' That's what happened to the Americans in 2008.

Listen! It is critical in the Christian life to pass the baton. The Bible says in Psalm 145, verse 4, ''One generation shall praise Your works to another, and shall declare Your mighty acts.'' One generation of believers passes the baton of faith to the next generation of believers. Christianity is really only one generation from extinction, because if the one generation doesn't pass to the younger generation and the baton drops, then the truth is lost, Christianity falls apart, and the move of God fails. Now, we know that's not going to happen, but listen! It's not going to happen globally because God always has a remnant, but it can happen individually, and we don't want that to take place in our lives. We don't want that to take place in your lives.
