The year was roughly 990 B C. David was king in Israel. He had been king for a good number of years. God had blessed him in incredible ways. David experienced victory after victory after victory. In 2nd Samuel, chapter 11 we read of David's great sin. It was in the spring of the year around 990 B.C., and it was the time that the kings go out to battle. But the Bible says David didn't go out to battle. David had gotten kind of casual in his role as the leader of God's people and God's army. He had gotten kind of casual and just coasting in his relationship with the LORD. He didn't go out to battle. He sent Joab, his general out to battle with the soldiers, and he stayed behind in Jerusalem. The Bible says it was about evening that he arose from his bed. Well, we know that in the evening you go to bed. David arises from his bed at evening time. He'd been just in the bed all day. He's been doing a bunch of nothing. He gets up out of bed at the evening time. He walks out on the roof of his palace. And what does he see? He sees a woman bathing, and she's so beautiful. And David is just captivated by her, and he just has to have her. He inquires about her. ''Who is this woman?'' And they said, ''That is Bathsheba. She is the wife of Uriah the Hittite. Uriah the Hittite was one of David's thirty mighty men. ''David, she is married,'' they were telling him. But he blew past that. He said, ''Bring her to me.'' They brought Bathsheba to David. He had a night of adultery, a night of sexual sin with her. Then he got it out of his system, so to speak, and he sent her on her way. She came back weeks later, and said, ''I am pregnant.'' And David knew he was in trouble. He had a problem on his hands because Uriah the Hittite is fighting his battle against the sons of Amon, and so Uriah's is going to know, hey, this isn't my child. So, what does he do? David calls for Uriah to come b ...
