Playing for the Future
John Elway was for many years the quarterback of the Denver Broncos. Although he was a great quarterback, his team was not that great. So year upon year they experienced losing seasons and humiliation, while he endured numerous injuries. All of his efforts and faithfulness seemed to be useless.
Despite their situation John Elway did not retire but kept on enduring the pain and the failure of football. Why did he keep going?
Elway played in six AFC NFL Championship Games, winning five of those, therefore playing in five Super Bowls, losing the first three, but winning his last two appearances. In his many years of playing in the NFL, Elway was sacked for a total of 559 times out of 256 games, an NFL record.
He only missed fifteen games out of playing for a total of sixteen years. Upon retiring Elway said ''It's time for me to move on. I can't do it physically anymore, and that's really hard for me to say.''
Elway missed just 15 starts in 16 seasons because of illness or injury, but he was one of the strongest and toughest quarterbacks ever, despite being sacked an N.F.L.-record 559 times in 256 games.
He played through broken bones, pulled muscles and several severe knee injuries. In fact, Elway will most likely have his arthritic left knee replaced in the coming years.
Recently, Elway has had to spend increasing time with Steve Antonopulos, the team's athletic trainer, who patched up the future Hall of Famer like a rag doll before and aft ...
