Intro.; the gospel of the cross
A. Between Palm Sunday and Easter there lies the very center of Christianity; the cross
1. Palm Sunday; the day of the king's triumphant entry into his city. Hosanna to the king.
2. Easter Sunday; the ultimate day of victory! The lord rises triumphantly, victoriously from the dead. He is alive. He wins and we with him.
3. Between the two Sundays is the single most important, most glorious event in history; The cross.
B. The cross is the center of Christianity
Ill. The cross is ground zero from which the earthquake of redemption flows
1. The atomic blast center of redemption that exploded in hell itself, shock waves still rolling today
C. There is no Christianity without the cross.
1. Take away the cross and Christianity crumbles into dust, another religious support group.
2. Miss the gospel of the cross, its message and revelation and you miss the power and
Benefits of the resurrection. Means nothing.
3. Bold statement; cannot be a Christian without the cross.
1. None optional, non-negotiable.
2. Christians are first people of the cross before they are people of the resurrection.
D. Not just my opinion; scripture
1. Paul; gal 6:14 but God forbid that I should glory except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.
2. Jesus commands it. (1Corinthians 11:25-26) (25) after the same manner also {he took}
the cup, when he had supped, saying, this cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink {it}, in remembrance of me. (26) for as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the lord's death till he come.
Ill. The death of Christ becomes the focus of our memory; remember his death.
