Esther 1
SUMMARY: In this message we explore the uniqueness of the O.T. book of Esther. 1) Unique historical background. 2) Uniquely Infamous. 3) Uniquely Subtle. 4) Uniquely Christological
INTRODUCTION: I used to watch the TV show ''Dateline.'' In every episode they would profile a murder that had taken place. Often it would be a husband who murdered a wife or a wife who murdered a husband. And I couldn't help but notice how often the episode would begin with these words: ''It was a whirlwind romance.''
It can be a risky thing to begin a long-term romantic relationship with a person you hardly know. The same is true with studying a book of the Bible. We preacher-types are prone to jumping right into the text of a particular scripture without taking the time to establish the CONTEXT. The old saying is, ''A text without a context is a pretext for a proof-text.'' If we don't take the time to understand the context of a passage, we might get some things wrong.
Today, I'm going to begin a sermon series in the book of Esther. The series is entitled ''Inconspicuous Providence.'' Because we're going to be spending SEVERAL weeks in this O.T. book, and because some may be unfamiliar with it, I want to spend our time this morning looking at the 30,000-foot view and getting the ''big picture.''

The book of Esther does not start out ''once upon a time.'' That's because it's not a fairy-tale - it is an historical account. The events of Esther occurred from 483 BC to 473 BC, during the first half of the reign of King Xerxes. This is the same ''Xerxes'' who was depicted in the 2007 movie ''300'' when the Spartans led by Leonidas, fought the Persians, led by Xerxes, ...
