Pain (4 of 10)
Series: The Gospel in Esther
Steve Jones
Esther 2
SUMMARY: In this message we explore how Esther's character (and ours) was molded by pain. Specifically, 1) The Pain of Marital Dysfunction, 2) The Pain of Unfairness, 3) The Pain of Persecution.
INTRO: Let's play movie trivia. The movie is Rocky III. Rocky is set to fight ''Clubber Lang'' played by Mr. T. In the movie, an interviewer asks Clubber Lang, ''What is your prediction for the fight?'' And Clubber Lang answers with ONE word - what was it? ''PAIN.'' THAT is the title of our lesson today, ''Pain.''
The NY Post recently analyzed over 9 billion health insurance claims (from 2016) to discover the strangest ways people have gotten hurt.
1) 17,000 people walked into a wall.
2) 25,000 walked into a piece of furniture.
3) 1700 were struck by a cow.
4) 300 were bitten by a pig.
5) 10,000 were ACCIDENTALLY bitten by another PERSON (presumably not wearing a mask).
There are a lot of ways to get hurt. In our series on Esther, we come today to chapter two and a period of painful experiences in her life. This pain comes in a variety of ways. But all of this can be looked upon as a molding of Esther's character before her big moment of truth; before her ''for such a time as this moment.'' We'll talk about that next week. But today As Ben Franklin said, ''These things that hurt instruct.''
I. THE PAIN OF MARITAL DYSFUNCTION
Esther 2:19 ''When the virgins were assembled a second time''
A time gap exists between Esther 2:18, Esther's coronation as queen, and Esther 2:19 the SECOND gathering of the virgins. It is a time gap of approximately five years (Esther 3:7). The narrator does not explain why there would be a second gathering, though several explanations have been suggested. The explanation that has the fewest difficulties is that even after the queen was chosen, the king continued to gather young women for his pleasure.
