Genesis 11:1-9
Growing up, mom and dad had this old stereo system. It was made of wood. It was large, about the size of bedroom dresser or small kitchen buffet. You would lift the top of the table and inside was an AM radio and a record player. I loved that thing!!
It also had a place inside for their record collection. They had some Elvis records. Mom was always a huge Elvis fan. They had some Southern Gospel. I'm pretty sure there was some Johnny Cash and a Glen Campbell in there. (All the younger folks are going...huh?)
My favorite was the Goofy Gold Collection It was just a bunch of old silly songs like...
• Camp Granada. Beep Beep
• Purple People Eater. Ahab the Arab.
• Battle of New Orleans. Does your chewing gum lose its flavor?
Those old records, overtime and after a lot of use, especially by a little knucklehead like me, would develop some scratches. When the needle on that old record player hit a scratch it would make a noise, get stuck and that word or phrase in the song would play over and over again.
After 10 chapters and over two thousand years it feels like, no matter what happens, the record of humanity is stuck, and we hear the same story over and over.
Even after a catastrophic world-wide flood of judgment, man once again repeats himself in declaring his desire to be free of God.
Genesis 11.1-9 - Now the whole earth used the same language and the same words. 2 It came about as they journeyed east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there. 3 They said to one another, ''Come, let us make bricks and burn them thoroughly.''
