Intro/Attention

We're in a series on Sunday mornings called Summer In the Psalms. We've been studying selected psalms for a few weeks and this series will take us all the way to August. Today, we come to Psalm 12. This is a psalm of David.

What is the situation? David is not surrounded by upright and faithful people. He says that he is surrounded by ''everyone [who] utters lies.'' He sees the ''wicked'' all around him. He is surrounded by people who have no concern for the truth and no concern for righteousness. They twist the truth to meet their own needs. READ TEXT

*Have you ever felt all alone? I mean, really alone? Maybe the kids are playing kickball on the playground and there's an odd number of players. You don't get picked and you have to sit out. Maybe all of your coworkers ride off together to go to lunch, and you didn't even get invited. You just happen to see them pulling out of the parking lot. Maybe there's a large group of students at college going out drinking and partying, and you stay home on Friday night because you don't do that. Maybe you're the last family on earth that hasn't given your teenager SnapChat or TikTok on their phone. Or maybe you haven't even let them have a phone...GASP! I can hear it now, ''Everyone has a phone now! Everyone has SnapChat and TikTok, what's the big deal?'' If you're a parent who likes to be a bit sarcastic from time to time you can look at them and honestly say, ''Not everyone...because you don't!'' I've had moments when I felt all alone. I'm sure you have too.*

David felt alone as he wrote Psalm 12. He looked around and saw only enemies. He may have written this psalm as Saul was trying to kill him. Or maybe when his son, Absalom, was rebelling against his father and trying to take over the kingdom. Whenever this was written, David felt utterly alone. Have you been there before?
