PRAYER: Father in Heaven, as we gather today to remember brother D, we pray that you will use this service to comfort his family and friends who mourn his passing. We also ask that the things shared today, both from your Word and from his life, will be an encouragement to all of us to do justly, love mercy and walk humbly with you - as he did. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

When I think of brother D, I think of a ''nice'' man. I asked some people who were close to him to share some things with me and they all began with, ''Well, he was very nice man.'' Saying that someone was ''nice'' is one way to sum up the fruits of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness and self-control. But I want to explore this a little bit further.

I. A NICE MAN SPEAKS KIND WORDS
Pr.25:11 ''A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver.''
1 of brother D's neighbors told me that he rode his bike through the neighborhood and always stopped to talk to everyone. Not many people do that these days. Many of us are so busy that we barely take time to get to know our neighbors. Loneliness is at an all-time high. When someone takes the time to slow down, and offer a friendly greeting and a few minutes of conversation, it's a grace. JESUS did that. He walked SLOWLY thru the crowd. He stopped to talk to Zacchaeus, the Samaritan woman at the well, two blind men by the side of the road, and children in the street. With each gentle conversation he breathed life and hope into lonely people. Every time D was in church he would make a point of talking to me, usually to say, ''Nice sermon preacher.'' The cumulative effect of nice words is nourishing.
