Much of Hosea has to do with bad news or God's complaints concerning His people. There's good news in this book but, as usual, God's people get the bad news first. Personally, this is how I would prefer it. Whenever someone gives me a choice I always want to hear the bad news first because I like to end any conversation with good news.

In this one verse we discover a concise summary of God's complaints concerning Israel - His people. These complaints are not against everyone, only those that belong to Him. Many have unsuccessfully tried to apply this verse to America. However, the vast majority of all Americans do not belong to God. The only thing God wants from a lost person is to rest in Christ for salvation and become a member of His family.

Verse 1 is God's message to the church. If the church is ever to experience revival and this nation is ever to experience a great awakening we must take this verse to heart.

Hosea 4:1

4 Hear the word of the Lord,
You children of Israel,
For the Lord brings a charge against the inhabitants of the land:

''There is no truth or mercy
Or knowledge of God in the land.

Look at God's charge concerning His people:

GOD CHARGED HIS PEOPLE WITH NOT STANDING FOR THE TRUTH

''There is no truth or mercy
Or knowledge of God in the land.

Please understand that the truth God refers to here has nothing to do with how our society - and certainly not our politicians - defines truth. If this were true our definitions for truth would most certainly change from one generation to the next. No, this verse is referring to how God defines truth and this is the only truth that should matter to His people. The fact is, the truth is what God declares it to be. For instance, when Jesus said that God created mankind as male and female with clearly defined male and female roles that's exactly what He meant (Matt. 19:4).
