Speak Truth (6 of 20)
Series: Sermon on the Mount
Tim Melton
Matthew 5:33-37
There is an old story that tells about an emperor who was growing old. He had no children to take his throne. The emperor decided to invite the wealthy and educated families to bring in their children. He hoped that as he interviewed each one he would find one who would be worthy to someday rule his people, but none of them was worthy. Finding none of them better than the rest he decided to give them a test.
He called them back to the palace and gave each one of them a seed. He then told them that they had one year to grow the seed that they had been given. After one year he would call them back to the palace and see what they had done.
The emperor then followed the children out of the palace as they ran to tell their parents about the seed and the test. As the emperor now stood in the garden outside the palace he saw one of his gardeners pruning the flowers with his grandson. Having one seed left in his pocket the emperor decided that he would invite the gardener's grandson to join in the test. The boy's name was Ling.
Ling took the seed and wrapped it in a wet piece of cloth. He then put it in a small sack and tied the top closed. He then put it deep in his pocket so that he would be sure not to lose it. With all that his grandfather had taught him he hoped his seed would grow to be something great.
When Ling arrived home he found a simple pot and some rich soil. He planted the seed and took great care of it every day. After one week there was nothing. Undeterred Ling continued to care of the seed tirelessly. But after one month there was still nothing. It did not make sense. The seed had more than enough water and sunlight, but nothing.
Everyday Ling would go to school and listen to all the other children brag about how well their plant was doing. They would then ask Ling about his and he would tell them the truth. They would then laugh and mock him for his ignor ...
