What is your philosophy of life, your life motto, or a rule that you live by. So many people are building their lives on ideas or mottos that are superficial, empty or at best will not matter once this life is over. In the final teaching from the Sermon on the Mount we see what Jesus says about what we should build our lives upon.

In Matthew 7:24-29 Jesus Christ speaks directly to this issue and makes the choice remarkably clear.

24 ''Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. 26 And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. 27 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.''

28 And when Jesus finished these sayings, the crowds were astonished at his teaching, 29 for he was teaching them as one who had authority, and not as their scribes.

While many things are important in this life, the question is what are we building our life upon? When we try to build our life on anything else but Christ it may seem logical and even work for a while, but when the storms of life come the truth is made clear. Our misplaced trust is then exposed for what it truly is and we are left with only instability and a sense of hopelessness.

The word ''hear'' in Jesus day was more than just the mechanics of receiving sound vibrations in one's eardrum. To hear meant to listen and then to do. If you did not do then you did not really hear.
