Philippians 4:14-20
We all have our own idea about what we believe demonstrates maturity. Those ideas are different depending on the age of the person we are talking about. We expect a different level of maturity from an adult than we do from a teen-ager or a child.
John Maxwell identified four levels of maturity from Christians.
He listed them in progressive order starting with the least mature.
1. I'm going to do what I want regardless of my thoughts of God.
2. If God gives me what I want then I will give him what he wants.
3. I will give God what he wants with faith
that he will give me what I want.
4. I will give God what he wants regardless
of any thought for myself.
Many Christians spend their lives at level 2 or 3, but the greatest joy is found at level 4 - living for God no matter what happens.
Paul gives us four ways in which we demonstrate our maturity.
PERSONAL COMPASSION :14-15
Yet - even though he had learned to be content in every situation
(:11) he was thankful for their gift to help support his needs.
Share (KJB communicate) - Gk. to be a partaker of.
Trouble (KJB affliction) - Gk. distress or oppression.
1:17 To afflict (agitate) me in my imprisonment.
They sympathized with him while he was under house arrest and their sympathy was demonstrated in the gift which they sent him.
:15 Beginning of the gospel - when he had first preached the gospel to them on his second missionary journey ten years earlier.
When he left Philippi (Acts 16:18 after many days) they were the only church he founded who supported him as he continued on to other cities in the area of Macedonia.
Partnership (KJB fellowship) - Gk. koinonia meaning mutual sharing based on common values or interest (1:5,7;2:1;3:10).
