Jesus Christ is the Lamb of God slain before the foundation of the world. All of human history had been driving to the event we study today in John 19. Our 69th lesson in our series ''iBelieve'' brings us to what one writer calls ''the climax of redemptive history and the focal point of our salvation.'' (John MacArthur)

The video we just saw and the song we just heard are clear reminders that after a very lengthy series in this 4th gospel we have come at long last to the hill called, ''Calvary.''

Today's text reveals what that movie and song just sought to portray...Christ is condemned, cursed, and crucified between thieves. He hangs there in agony, soaked in the blood of redemption and suffering under the wrath of God and the anger of man.

By the close of this passage, the mystery of the ages will unfold before us. Namely, that the eternally-existing, ever-living Son of God...the giver, creator, and sustainer of LIFE will breathe His last, give up the ghost...and DIE.

Yet as sobering and even as sad as this scene may appear, I beg you by the mercies of our Lord, DO NOT LOOK AWAY. For there, suspended between heaven and earth, hanging in the middle Eastern sun, beaten beyond recognition and pierced through the hands and feet is the only hope of eternity that you have.

For that battered back is the back that bore your sin on the tree. Those nail-scarred hands are extending the forgiveness of God. That blood that flows from His body and pools at the base of the cross is the only thing that will wash away your sin and mine.

The Apostle Paul said, ''God forbid that I should glory in anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.'' For those of us who've been drawn by its power and cleansed by its blood, ''God forbid that we NOT glory in the cross.
