John 18:1-14
As we open the pages of the 18th chapter, we find our Lord headed to Gethsemane. We don't know exactly what time it is but it's the final night of the earthly life of Jesus prior to the cross. In fact, in John's gospel we are only 1 chapter away from the flogging post and only 56 verses away form the pounding of nails into the wrists and feet of the Savior.
As Jesus crosses the Kidron and kneels in the garden, Judas and the arresting officers are hot on His trail. They too, are leaving Jerusalem and heading for Gethsemane.
Carrying their swords, clubs, and torches, they are marching to arrest the Son of God and to begin the greatest miscarriage of justice humanity has ever known.
But don't feel sorry for Jesus. As they come to arrest Him, Christ is the One setting the trap and drawing them in.
My message is entitled, ''When Jesus Had Them Cornered.'' Because we will see in these verses that Jesus is the One who is very much in control of this night and all that it contains.
There's a part of us that wishes to stop these events. We hate to see an innocent man wrongly condemned. And we certainly do not want to see our precious Savior suffer.
But I'll remind you that earlier in his life Simon Peter spoke against the cross and Jesus said, ''Get behind Me Satan. You have set your mind on man's agenda and not on God's.'' And on this very night, Simon wields a sword to prevent the arrest. But Jesus doesn't need a Zorro-wannabe to help Him.
It may appear that these men are tools in the hand of Satan.
But they are actually pawns in the hand of the Lord.
His Sovereignty manifested in 3 ways.
1. Jesus did not flee the place (1-2)
As they bind Him with a rope and ''put the cuffs on Him,'' keep in mind, Jesus is calling the shots and He has them right where He wants them...including the very PLACE where He is arrested.
See, when this posse shows ...
