John 17:24-26
This is our 5th and final lesson in this 17th chapter. Here, we've been listening in on our Lord as He prays this public prayer. Public at least in that His 11 remaining apostles are listening.
It's been called:
The Holy of Holies of Prayer
The Greatest Prayer Ever Prayed
The Real Lord's Prayer and
The High Priestly Prayer
Having prayed about their life on earth, Jesus now prays about their eternity in heaven. So that's the subject of our 64th lesson here in John's gospel. We're talking about heaven.
3 simple verses...1 glorious truth...Heaven will be a glorious place because heaven is the home of a glorious Person to whom belongs glorious praise.
1. The glory of heaven involves a place we can go (24)
''I pray they will be with me where I am.'' Our Lord is describing a real and literal place.
Here we are, just a dozen verses away from his betrayal and arrest...with the darkness of Gethsemane setting in, the prayer of Jesus repeats a theme He introduced earlier that night. The language here in verse 24 would have had a ring of familiarity. Earlier on that dark night Jesus had prophesied about His betrayal and death. No doubt He noticed the anxious looks on the faces of the 11.
So, He graciously said, ''Let not your heart be troubled. You believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father's house are many mansions. If it were not so I would have told you so. And I go to prepare a PLACE for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will indeed come again and receive you to Myself that where I am, there you may be also.''
As the disciples head into the darkest night and the longest day of their life, Christ wants them to keep in mind...this isn't home! What an encouraging word when we struggle with the difficulties of life, to remember:
This world is not my home. I'm just a passing through.
My treasures are laid up somewhere beyond the blue. ...
