John 16:16-24
An elderly farmer and his aged wife went to the big city for the first time. They saw the bright lights, the skyscrapers, and all the sights of the modern America. Checking into their hotel, the old farmer looked and saw an old, decrepit, unattractive woman standing by what appeared to be a closet. It was an elevator.
Suddenly the ''closet'' doors opened, the old woman got in that little closet, and the doors closed. After hearing some bells chime and seeing some lights flash, the doors reopened and a beautiful...DROP DEAD GORGEOUS woman stepped through
the doors. The man grabbed his aged wife by the arm and yelled, ''Hurry up, Ma! Get on that thing before it runs out of gas!''
Truthfully, I'd be a wealthy man if I could change elderly people into young people...lead into gold...or sickness into health. But in today's text, we read about the secret to transformation that is just as elusive and just as valuable as the ones I've mentioned. Here in John 16, Jesus talks about turning sorrow into joy.
In this passage, there are 3 little vignettes...3 little subsections that each speak of finding joy in the wake of sorrow. This text is somewhat easy to divide because the 3 subsets all speak of joy.
Verse 20 - Your sorrow will be turned into joy
Verse 22 - No one will take your joy away from you
Verse 24 - Your joy may be made full
Now, if life has pressed in on you...if you are facing a circumstance that has taken your breath away...I invite you to lean your ear up to the word of God as the Master Teacher
shows us how to experience a radical transformation...as SORROW turns into JOY.
