Come, Holy Spirit (58 of 75)
Series: The Gospel of John

John 16:5-15
In John 16 we find an interesting section of Scripture where Jesus puts the spotlight on the Person of the Holy Spirit. It is typically the job of the Holy Spirit to point to Christ...but here, as He did back in chapter 14, Jesus points us to the Holy Spirit.
As we head into the concluding section of this Upper Room Discourse, the Savior begins to highlight the things the Holy Spirit will do when He, the Holy Spirit, comes.
If I were to ask the average American Christian, ''what would happen if the Holy Spirit really came to church today?'' I'd get a variety of answers. Some would suggest:
We'd get a new revelation...a new word...a new prophecy
We would speak in an ecstatic gibberish language
Some might fall into the floor as if in a trance
Tumors would fall off our bodies and roll down the aisle
We might bark like dogs and laugh like hyenas
While I reject each of those extra-biblical notions, I am convinced that if the Holy Spirit were free to do His work in our lives we'd see some mighty works here today. Oh, they might not be as ''spectacular'' as the list I just gave but they'd be powerful in the scope of eternity.
This brief passage on the Holy Spirit is somewhat easy to divide. For there are 3 times the Lord Jesus references the Holy Spirit ''coming'' or ''being sent'' into the heart and life of the believer.
There are a lot of things the Holy Spirit does. But in this text, Christ makes it clear that the Holy Spirit will comfort, convict, and convince. That is, He will bring peace in our difficulties, conviction in our sin, and faith in our time of doubt.
In other words, the Holy Spirit will assure the people of God that Jesus was who He said He was, He did what He said He would do, and He will do what He promised He's yet to do.
1. When He comes He brings consolation (5-7)
Verse 6 speaks of sorrow ''filling'' their hearts. This is an unusual ...
