I'll never forget the day I received a very important phone call. Although I was home alone with my children, I absolutely HAD to take this call. Locking myself in the bathroom, I promised my kids a spanking if they even knocked on the door. After my call, I came out of the bathroom to find one of my children with a black crayon coloring in the grout lines on the kitchen tile.

I was in college when the nation was captivated by 8 year old Kevin McAllister. Amazingly, his entire family forgot about him as they left on a Christmas vacation and Kevin became the object of two robbers who tried to harm the little boy in their attempt to burglarize the house. Fortunately for little Kevin, the whole thing was just a comedy set on the big screen. But McCauley Culkin scared the wits out of criminals and children alike with the prospect of being left ''Home Alone.''

Being left alone did not turn out nearly that well this past Tuesday in Crossville, TN. Police in the small community are investigating the tragic death of a 7 year old boy who died from a gunshot wound after he was accidentally shot by his 8 year old brother. The two boys along with two young girls were left alone in an automobile while their mom and stepdad went into a Verizon store. While it apparently took two adults to go inside and pay a cell phone bill, the older brother found his mom's handgun and the rest is tragic history.

Whether humorous or tragic, these stories remind us that very little good comes when children are left alone.

As the Upper Room Discourse continues in John 14, Jesus makes two promises to His apostles and to each of us as His disciples. One, He is going away and two, He will not leave us alone. Rather than dissecting this passage word by word as I typically do, I want to draw three very broad principles as we move back through this text.
