John 14:15-17
As we open our Bibles let's turn once again to John 14. As I mentioned last time, it is the job of the Holy Spirit to point to Christ but here the Lord Jesus points us to the Holy Spirit.
All Christians have the Holy Spirit. The Spirit of God is IN you if you are saved. But as He lives in the house of your heart, the question is, ''Is the Spirit at home in your house?'' Is He free to move as He chooses? Can the Spirit ''be Himself'' in your life? Is the Spirit at home in your house?
Romans 8:9 teaches that, ''If anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him.''
But again, our question is not, ''Is the Spirit in your house?''
The question is, ''Is the Spirit at home in your house?''
In our first part, we reminded ourselves that the Bible teaches the Holy Spirit can be quenched, resisted, blasphemed, and grieved.
The Holy Spirit is a PERSON, not a thing. And just like any other person, He can be made to feel ''at home.'' When the Spirit is at home, He does what He does.
And when He's doing what He does, it indicates He's at home.
1. He perfects sanctified conduct (15)
The main focus from our last lesson is that the Holy Spirit works in our lives through salvation and sanctification, through conversion and conviction. When the Spirit of God is truly at home, He is fashioning us into the image of Christ and transforming our conduct and behavior.
The bottom line from our last message is that when He's at home, He will be confronting, convicting, and conforming our behavior.
2. He provides Spiritual counsel (16)
As Jesus tells the disciples He's going away, they have to be wondering, ''How will we know what to do?'' In our chaotic world, modern disciples often ask the same question.
How will I know...
Where to go to school or what career to pursue?
What is God's call on my life?
What do I do about ...
