John 14:15-17
As we open our Bibles let's turn to John 14. Here we find an interesting section of Scripture where Jesus puts the spotlight on the Person of the Holy Spirit. It is typically the job of the Holy Spirit to point to Christ. But here the Lord Jesus points us to the Holy Spirit.
This book is about Jesus. John 20:31 - ''But these have been written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and believing, you may have life in His name.''
And yet in this opening section of the Upper Room Discourse the Lord Jesus speaks in Trinitarian language. He has repeatedly spoken about God, the Father. He has equated Himself, the Son of God, to the Father. And now He begins to speak about God, the Holy Spirit. So, this morning I want to do more ''teaching'' than ''preaching'' and share some simple thoughts on the Person and work of the Holy Spirit. And I want to ask you, ''Is the Spirit at home in your house.''
All Christians have the Holy Spirit. Since the transitional days in the book of Acts, all born-again believers in Jesus have the Holy Spirit. The Spirit of God is IN you. That's not even a question. But as He lives in the house of your heart, the question is, ''Is the Spirit at home in your house?'' Is He free to move and work as He chooses? Can the Spirit ''be Himself'' in your life? Is the Spirit at home in your house?
Romans 8:9 teaches that ALL Christians have the Holy Spirit. ''However you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him.''
But the question is not, ''Is the Spirit in your house?''
The question is, ''Is the Spirit at home in your house?''
To start this lesson, I need to mention a few things about the Spirit.
