John 14:7-11
As Christ continues this new ''Upper Room Sermon'' He moves into a brief but fascinating section about His oneness with the Father. He started this great sermon with a word about the Father's house and now He continues with a word about the Father's Son.
I heard about a mischievous little boy who wanted a red bike for Christmas. His mother told him, ''Go to your room and write Jesus a letter and tell Him why you think you deserve a new bike.'' He began to write, ''Dear Jesus, I've been a really good boy.'' He realized that wasn't true so he came up with another plan. He ran downstairs and grabbed the ''Mother Mary'' figurine from his mother's nativity scene. Running back to his room with ''Mary'' in hand, he wrote, ''Dear Jesus, I have your mother. If you ever want to see her again, bring me a red bike.''
Here in verses 7-12 Jesus calls God His Father 9x. That clearly means Christ is claiming to be the Son of God as well as the Son of Mary.
In these 5 verses, Jesus is helped along by a question from Thomas and a statement from Philip as He continues His claim that He is the only way to the Father.
The reason He's the only way to the Father is because He is at One with the Father.
The reason He's the only way to God is because He Himself is God.
Once again, Jesus clearly presents Himself as the eternally existing, self-sustaining, uncreated Creator of All. I wish to borrow some of the words we sang a moment ago and speak on this subject: Veiled in Flesh, the Godhead See.
The deity and Divine Sonship of Jesus Christ is a constant theme of John's gospel. In chapter 1 we recall that this Word, who was God from eternity past, the Creator of all things stepped into time and became flesh. As another songwriter put it, He was the ''Word of the Father, now in flesh appearing.''
And when He did, we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of ...
