John 14:2-6
In this 49th lesson in our series in John, we come to what is one of the most famous passages in this 4th gospel. As our Bibles are opening to John 14, we recall that we are in the final night, the last hours, of the life of Jesus. And yet the Master stops to deliver one of the most profound lessons in His entire teaching ministry. It's called ''The Paschal Discourse'' or you might call it, ''The Upper Room Sermon.''
A.W. Pink called this sermon, ''unsurpassed in all the Scriptures'' and with good reason. To help you understand why Jesus preached a long sermon that night, I want to tell you about a conversation I recently had with my dad.
My dad just turned 72. Because of his age and a few health issues, he's talking more and thinking more about his own mortality. He recently asked me to go with him to his attorney's office to familiarize myself with his estate. As the executor of his estate my dad knows there are certain things I need to be familiar with in the event of his death. Knowing about these things will help bring some measure of solace and stability when the moment of his departure from this world comes.
Similarly, Jesus knows His hour has arrived. And the word ''hour'' is no longer a poetic metaphor. It's now a chronological reality. By daybreak Christ will have been prophetically betrayed, suddenly arrested, apostolically denied, falsely accused, wrongly condemned, and graciously headed for a criminal's cross.
In this ''Upper Room Discourse'' Jesus talks about a number of topics. But the common thread, to me, seems to be that each topic is something the disciples will need to know when Christ is no longer physically among them. And He begins with a word about His second coming and ''The Truth about Heaven.''
