You know... that's what we say when someone is baptized. ''You're buried with Christ in baptism. Raised to walk in newness of life.''
I learned that terminology a long time ago. In fact, when I was much younger, and first cutting my teeth in ministry, I was working with a Pastor that was militant when it came to certain terminology in the church.
In fact... Every time we'd do the WELCOME at church-the welcome had to be word-for-word according to the script we were given. There was no option to shoot from the hip. Everything had to be perfect.
And that was with the welcome! You can only imagine the intensity when it came to what was said in the baptistery. When we would baptize someone, we were told exactly what angle to hold our right arm before lowering someone into the water... and we were told exactly what words to say. It had to be perfect.
The reason I'm sharing that with you is because I can remember about 11 or 12 years ago... It was this Thanksgiving Sunday. We'd recently had several teenagers give their life to Christ, and now on that Sunday morning, 8 of those teenagers were scheduled to be baptized.
Well, I wasn't doing the baptisms. Instead, one of our brand new... young... youth pastors was going to baptize them. And we had mentioned the baptism process to him... we had given him the terminology...
But when he entered the water that morning... and the lights came on... every bit of information we gave him went away. And to hear him tell the story was hilarious... He said, ''The lights were so bright. All I could see was our Pastor glaring at me as he sat on ...
