You don't have to travel very far... before you can find yourself in a completely different world.

Parts of our own city look different, feel different, and even smell different.

I mean, think about it: One part of our town smells like chocolate. Another part of our town smells like diapers. You know it's true! There are different worlds represented, even right here at home.

In parts of our town, you'll see poverty. In other parts of town, you'll see prosperity. Even within our region, you can see a multitude of cultures represented.

Polk County is very different than Bradley County.
The culture on the river is different than the culture... not on the river.
20 minutes north... in Athens, looks completely different than 20 minutes south in Ooltewah.

That's true today, where we live. But you know what? It's been true for a long time, all around the world.

As I read about Paul's journey in the book of Acts, I can't imagine how he must have felt as he traveled from town to town. Thessalonica... Philippi... Berea... These places were all very unique.

Then he made his way to the city of Athens... a place unlike any other in the first century. Athens was a completely different world than Paul had ever experienced.

This was an intellectual city that was a hub for pagan worship. There were false gods and idols on just about every street corner. Thousands of people would flood the streets on a daily basis, trying to get into these temples to worship these false gods and make sacrifices to them.

It's no wonder [Acts 17:16] says, ''While Paul was waiting for them in Athens, he was deeply distressed when he saw that the city was full of idols.''
When he saw the culture of Athens with his own eyes... he was distressed by the idolatry in that city. But God used him in Athens.
