John 12:3-8
I did not initially intend to spend an additional sermon in these opening verses of John 12. But as I've studied them and reflected and prayed I've noticed there is a great lesson for us...just in time for Mothers' Day or any day for that matter.
It's the final week before the cross. Yet John pauses to record a story that happened on the Saturday night before the Triumphal entry. We are now just days away from the kiss of betrayal...days away from the crucifixion of our Lord and John, under Divine inspiration, pauses to tell us the story of a woman named Mary, who anointed Jesus' feet.
Jesus personally inscribes her on the pages of Scripture and she shows us how to leave a legacy for the sake of the gospel.
And that brings us to this text and to this dear sister named Mary.
Her story is included in Matthew 26, Mark 14, and here in John 12.
But as familiar as we are with what she did, her actions are not what caught my attention. I'm captivated and challenged by something Jesus said ABOUT her actions.
Matthew 26:13 - ''Truly I say to you, wherever this gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be spoken of in memory of her.''
Jesus said, ''You'll never tell MY story without talking about HER. And you'll never tell HER story without talking about ME.'' What kind of life must I live to get Jesus to say a thing like that?
To think that some can't tell the story of my life without talking about Jesus...and they can't tell the story of what Jesus has done in their life without talking about me?!?!
How in the world do you pull off a legacy-building life like that?!?!?
1. The simple girl (3a - Mary)
We don't know a lot about her except her name, her hometown, and the fact that she enjoyed spending time with Jesus.
Her sister Martha was the ''special'' one...the gifted one. But Mary was always the bridesmaid, 2nd ...
