As we come to the 39th lesson and the 12th chapter we officially enter into the last week of Jesus' life prior to the cross. We are barely over ½ way through this 4th gospel but we are a week from the cross.

John spends 11 chapters on the first 33 years of Jesus' life. Then he spends 10 chapters describing the last few earthly days.

In the opening of John 12 we find the story of a woman breaking open an alabaster box of expensive ointment and pouring it on the Lord Jesus. It's one of the most memorable worship services in the Bible.

Being in full-time ministry for over 20 years, I've had a lot of memorable things to happen in worship services. And a few of them I can even talk about publicly.

Well, here we have one of the most memorable worship scenes in the Bible. But it's not because of what someone said. It's because of what some people did.

I want us to examine the first three verses of chapter 12 and learn some things about worship from at least 4 devoted worshippers who lauded Jesus with what I'm calling ''Extravagant Worship.''

Mary's daring and bold act of worship recorded in verse 3 was so profound and extravagant that in the other gospels Jesus commented that in light of what she had done, everywhere HIS story would be told, HER story would be told as well.

With one powerful and poignant act of worship, Mary of Bethany finds herself forever enshrined on the pages of Scripture and this sister of Lazarus is forever connected to the Son of God. In Matthew's gospel, Jesus called it a ''good deed'' or a ''beautiful thing.'' It's obvious Mary not only touched His head and His feet but she touched His heart.

But while Mary was the only one that day that poured perfume on Jesus, she is far from the only one that poured praise on Jesus. There are several other characters, at least 4 individuals, who lifted up Jesus with extravagant worship. This passage ...
