John 11:47-57
When I first began preaching through John I was looking forward to chapter 11. I actually thought John 11 was about the resurrection of Lazarus. But after preaching my 3rd message from this chapter I'm more convinced than ever that this chapter is not about the death and resurrection of Lazarus. It, like the rest of the Bible, is about the death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ.
That truth is displayed very clearly in these final verses of John 11. The last 11 verses of the 11th chapter, the ones that most people never read and few preachers ever preach tell a dark yet Divine tale about a murder plot...a conspiracy to shed the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Conspiracy theories are very popular in the American culture. By definition a conspiracy theory is ''a proposition or accusation that two or more people have secretly met to cause or cover-up wrongdoing.''
People have had conspiracy theories about the deaths of Abraham Lincoln, Lee Harvey Oswald, JFK, and even Marilyn Monroe. The common thread in conspiracy theories is that a secret meeting occurred, a plan was devised, and some sinister plot is underway.
Well, the truth is, the closing verses of John 11 tell the story of a murder plot. Verse 53 plainly says, ''From that day on they planned together to kill Him.'' If this were in a modern courtroom, we could stop right here and convict them of ''conspiracy to commit murder.''
But this conspiracy theory has both an eternal consequence AND an eternal Co-Conspirator. As the Sanhedrin gathers in a secretive room at an undisclosed location, they have no way of knowing they are being used like pawns and played like fiddles.
They don't know what Bible students know...that as they hatch this BLOODY CONSPIRACY...there is an unseen chairman presiding over the meeting, an unheard voice leading the conversation, and an unyielding Sovereignty that has already ...
