Introduction: We're talking about baptism today. We're in a sermon series entitled ''Obey Everything'' taken from Jesus' great commission. We've been looking at Jesus' commands in the gospel of Matthew starting towards the beginning of his public ministry and proceeding pretty much chronologically. Today, we're in Matthew 28, back to where it ALL started, the great commission itself. Let's talk about three important truths the Great Commission teaches us about baptism.


I. BAPTISM HAS A UNIQUE IMPORTANCE

Mt.28:19-20 ''Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.''


The key term in this commission is ''make disciples.'' ''Going'' is the pre-requisite for making disciples; ''baptizing'' and ''teaching'' are the MEANS of making disciples.

Baptism is distinguished from the category of ''everything'' which the disciples must be taught to obey. This is especially important in light of the common Protestant view that baptism is just one of the ''good works'' of the Christian life, that it is just an ''act of obedience'' comparable to the many other acts of obedience that we are to perform simply because God has commanded them. Baptism would then be no different from ''watch and pray'' or ''remember me in the Lord's Supper'' or ''Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.'' If this is so, why is baptism alone singled out for specific mention in the great commission? Why is it separated from ''everything I have commanded you''?
