Matthew 26:36
SERMON SUMMARY: This sermon addresses Jesus' command to keep watch and pray (Garden of Gethsemane). 1) Pray WITH Jesus, 2) Pray IN time, 3) Pray OVER temptation.
Matthew Henry ''Whenever God is preparing to do something great in the earth, He first sets His people a-praying!'' We continue in our sermon series, ''Obey Everything,'' by looking at Jesus' command to his disciples to keep watch and pray.
I. Pray WITH Jesus
Mt.26:36-39 Then Jesus went with them to the olive grove called Gethsemane, and he said, ''Sit here while I go over there to pray.'' He took Peter and Zebedee's two sons, James and John, and he became anguished and distressed. He told them, ''My soul is crushed with grief to the point of death. STAY HERE AND KEEP WATCH WITH ME.'' He went on a little farther and bowed with his face to the ground, praying, ''My Father! If it is possible, let this cup of suffering be taken away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.''
For the sake of clarity, when Jesus asked these men to ''keep watch'' with him, ''keeping watch'' also incorporated prayer. This is made more clear in verse 41 where Jesus says, ''Keep watch and pray.'' This has been called the most difficult hour of Jesus' life. That's evident from the words used to describe his mental and spiritual stress: ''soul-crushing,'' ''grief to the point of death,'' ''anguish,'' and ''distress.'' Have you ever heard the expression, ''You look like you're carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders''? Jesus was about to do that LITERALLY - the weight of the world's sin, the world's guilt, the world's punishment, the world's curse. And it stressed him. We can understand that. And we can understand that he didn't want to be ALONE during this most vulnerable hour of his life. He wanted someone to BE with him and to PRAY with him; to pray FOR him.
